What is Body Simulation?
The merging of Dr. N. Ty Smith's 40 years of pioneering work in the field of biomedical simulation and the engineering and training expertise of a flight simulation company has produced the finest and most detailed model of physiology and pharmacology that is available for teaching and training anesthesia today.
Body Simulation is a software simulation of human physiology and pharmacology that runs on common personal computers. It is the core of a hi-fidelity line of software applications that are geared toward teaching, training, research, development, and marketing.
The Body Simulation models are a collection of models that are built around a cardio-pulmonary system simulation, all integrated in a fascinating manner to allow real body responses to drugs and other stimuli be calculated on home and office PCs.
The first implementation of Body Simulation is Body Simulation for Anesthesia -- software for teaching and training in the field of anesthesia. A detailed and graphically pleasing user interface has been customized to represent the operating room environment. Users may explore a myriad of scientific and clinical aspects as they run through life-like cases. The detailed model allows administration of IV lines, fluids, injected and inhaled drugs and agents, anesthesia machine and ventilator settings, and many more clinical maneuvers. Extensive plotting a graphing features make exploration of internal processes fun, exciting, and informative.
Body Simulation for Critical Care also uses the core Body Simulation models and puts the user in an ICU environment. 12-lead ECGs for different patients with different conditions may be recorded and printed, and other cardiac and ventilation scenarios may be explored. Body Simulation for Critical Care will continue to be developed and updates will be available during the coming year.
Body Simulation for First Responders is in the planning stages. Expected in 2007, this teaching and training package for first reponders will take full advantage of the excellent Body Simulation physiologic models and will
help to improve patient outcomes and general health care world-wide.
The Body Simulation models are available as a dynamic link library for groups that require a physiologic model behind their application. This library is the core of Body Simulation for Anesthesia, just waiting to have a custom interface built around it.
Body CV is a sneak-peak of the next generation of Body Simulation. This extensive cardio-vascular model uses over 100 compartments to calculate pressure, flow, and volume waveforms in the compartments. These waveforms are remarkably accurate, therefore the system offers tremendous insight into cardio-vascular mechanics.
Body Simulation will continue to grow and become more extensive. We see no limits for simulation of human physiology, and we are looking forward to each giant step we can take with all the increased computing power that becomes available to the medical community.
